Description of Hollywood Cemetery as seen from Belle Isle (Richmond)
As you may know, my hometown of Richmond was founded at the Fall Line of the James River. Millenia ago, geological forces operating on a line of limestone, running from Georgia through Pennsylvania and beyond, caused huge blocks of this limestone to push up to the surface, especially in the river bed of what became the James River. These limestone boulders form a barrier to boat traffic on the James and mark the furthest point west that large vessels could navigate upriver from the Ocean and the Bay. Today Richmond straddles both sides of the James as indicated by this work. The view is of the mausoleum in Hollywood Cemetery on the north bank from Belle Isle adjacent to the south bank. TO
